Windows Live Writer Abandons XP Users

I recently set up a new/old Dell GX280 mini tower that I picked up at a irresistible price (actually I bought 2 and combined the RAM, etc.). Call me old fashioned, but I'm still happy with Windows XP. I can understand that the Microfuzz makes it's mega profits by regularly pursuading users to purchase new OSs, but my philosophy has always been not to fix what isn't broken, so I normally delay OS changes until I need to install something that requires it or whatever. Well, MS seems to be on to me there. They recently replaced their Windows Live Writer free download with "Windows Live Writer 2011", which can only be installed on Vista or Win 7. There is no version now available that can be installed on an XP machine. And since it's one of those darned online installs, you won't have a complete install file saved anyplace.

Luckily, I do still have Windows Live Writer installed on the old XP machine I was aiming to phase out, and it still works. Unfortunately, though, it kind of blows the convenience of blogging in WLW if I have to hit the KVM button and work in another machine. Live Writer is a free program, though, and when you get something free, it's always on the giver's terms. Still, I mutter under my breath a bit...

There are alternatives to Live Writer, such as Zoundry Raven, but I like WLM more. I'll keep my eyes open for something. It seems like an excellent opportunity for a developer to edge into the niche.
